Renewable energy certificates, also known as RECs, represent the environmental benefits of power produced from renewable generators. RECs are sold separately from electricity and can be used to offset pollution from fossil-fuel generation. When combined with your electricity usage, REC purchases are equivalent to buying power directly from a renewable generator. Although you are not using the green power directly, the REC purchase ensures that your energy consumption is replaced by green power elsewhere on the grid. REC purchases can also be used for carbon offsets by replacing polluting energy sources with clean, non-polluting ones.
